Functions of learning management systems (LMS)


An LMS for e-learning materials is approximately similar to a library for books. A book can be read offline (or carried, for example), but only in the library it has the number, classification, search accuracy and the tracking mechanism.    

Learning management system is the Central hub, around which the entire process of e-learning in the company is organized. Its cornerstone role has resulted in one of the bright traits of modern LMS: they can do a lot and at once.    

Today’s LMS’s are an intranet portal, a catalogue of educational materials with detailed statistics, a platform for communication of students with teachers, a video conferencing system and even a billing system. Evolution has led these systems to "complexity": by buying or renting one modern solution, the company gets a modular constructor able to solve any arising tasks of the organization and to support the distance learning.

Errors in the implementation of Learning management systems (LMS’s)

Curiously enough, but the extensive functionality of LMS’s often leads to risks in the successful introduction of e-learning in the company. At the stage of pilot implementation of e-learning it is required to have clear priorities and, in a good sense, "tunnel" vision, aimed at achieving the first success in distance learning without the distraction of unessential or redundant tasks.      

A classic example is the functionality of webinars, built-in by default in most modern learning management systems (LMS’s). The mere presence of this function and the desire to use all available opportunities often caused the company to adjust the established plans of the pilot run in favor of the integration of this function into the learning process, including directing resources to the trainers and developers at unusual and unplanned task.

The moral is: "Follow the plan and do not be distracted". The time will come for webinars and video chats. Aiming at learning objectives of immediate interest is the first priority.
